Degreasers don’t work all that great when the grease has been sitting there for a long time. Such is the case with the kitchen.
Many people use the kitchen for cooking but few do a thorough job of cleaning after they cook. This is especially true for cleaning up grease. If you look around your stovetop, you will undoubtedly find a lot of old grease. The bad news is that they are one of the toughest and most annoying things to clean up—degreasers don’t work all too well when the grease has been sitting there for a while.
But the good news is that there is an easy solution that is guaranteed to work. All you need is a portable steamer and a rag. Yup, a steamer you use to steam your clothes or upholstery can be used to clean tough grease. It is the best solution for cleaning grease I have stumbled upon.
You want the steamer to hold enough water so that you don’t have to refill it every few minutes but you want it small enough so that you can move it around the kitchen easily. Here is an example of a steamer that would work for this purpose.

A decent portable steamer will run you about $30 to $40.
And if you really want to do a thorough job with the toughest grease stains, then getting a brunch that attaches to a power drill is also helpful.
Here is all you need to do.
- Turn the steamer on. Wait for the steamer to heat up. When you see the steamer release steam, it is ready to be used.
- Steam the grease you want to clean up. The heat will turn the grease from a solid state to liquid state.
- Immediately wipe the grease when it changes to a liquid state from the steam. And if it doesn’t come out with just a wipe with a rag, then you can use a power drill with an attachable brush. Here is a picture of one so you know what I am referring to. You can get them (the brushes) for under $10 on Amazon.

All in all, if you do not have any of these things laying around, this solution will cost you about $40 to $50. But it is guaranteed to work on the toughest stains.
So that’s it. That’s how you clean up tough grease without a degreaser. Use a steamer.
